周春生，上海师范大学人文学院世界历史系教授，博士生导师。主要著作有：《悲剧精神与欧洲思想文化史论》、《马基雅维里思想研究》、《文艺复兴史研究入门》、《西蒙兹文化观研究》等。在《哲学研究》、《世界历史》、《史学理论研究》等刊物上发表论文多篇。另有《实在主义的形而上学》、《马基雅维里——一个被误解的人》等译著多部。

6世纪艺术史家瓦萨利《意大利艺苑名人传》奠定了意大利文艺复兴艺术史研究的基础。19世纪英国学者克罗与意大利学者卡瓦卡塞莱长期合作，用丰富的史料和最新的学术成果就意大利绘画史部分做了详实的研究，并相继出版了《新意大利绘画史》、《北意大利绘画史》等著作。其中，《新意大利绘画史》关注文艺复兴古典风格的源头，侧重作品本身，而非抽象理论。行文流畅，以叙事风格撰写美术史，反映晚期浪漫主义历史写作的典型特色。

克罗、卡瓦卡塞莱在艺术史研究的理念、方法上借鉴发挥了瓦萨利的基本思路。克罗、卡瓦卡塞莱的成果连同他们的名声一起被称作“新瓦萨利”（New Vasari）。这样，前后瓦萨利的成果交相辉映，使意大利文艺复兴艺术史研究迈上新的学术台阶。

学界对克罗、卡瓦卡塞莱的赞誉声不断，意大利艺术史家摩莱里在《德国美术馆中的意大利大师们》“序言”中称克罗、卡瓦卡塞莱的这部著作及相关的其他几部著作是论意大利绘画的最重要作品。书前还有文艺复兴研究专家周春生教授长达一万五千字的导言，对各卷内容、学术脉络做了详细的研究和说明。
